Discussion and Conclusion

Drawing on Bourdieu’s field theory, this study examines the development of the adoption of audience metrics in the journalistic field to understand the origin, driving forces, and cross-field influences that have shaped this trend. Outside the journalistic field, neighboring and intermediate fields cast influences on journalism in terms of technology, business model, and the vision of audience. In the journalistic field, external pressures coming from outside the journalistic field meet the internal influences generated by the dynamics of journalistic doxa as a source of stability and habitus as a source of change. The adoption of audience metrics as a trend in the journalistic field is an outcome of these dynamics.

Based on these discussions, this study proposes a dimensional model to understand field theory and the journalistic field (Figure 2). Unlike the continuum model, the heteronomous dimension (orange) and the autonomous dimension (blue) are considered in a multi-dimension universe. In this universe, the journalistic field takes at least three axes to come into being: the techno-economic means, the subject of journalism, and the object of journalism. On the subject of journalism axis, adjustments are made between the “audience as social capital” and “audience as economic capital” conceptualizations, while on the object of journalism axis, journalism has moved between qualitative evidence and quantitative evidence on which journalism relies to justify itself.
